Cairo, Egypt

The pilot said not a word through the entire flight, not even to buckle up or stow my tray. But he took me from point A to point B—Lyon to Cairo—in less time than I could finish my review the trove of data sent to me by Simon. Mainly because I didn’t intend on finishing the dossier.

The information was nearly worthless, most of it nothing more than what you might find on American chamber of commerce websites. In fact, when I did my first cursory read-through, I questioned if Simon had sent the wrong files. Maybe they had another operative in the field, and this data dump was intended for him or her.

“Another operative.” Interesting. It was a theory about Simon that had never before crossed my mind. I chewed on that as I waited in the customs line with my Zane Ellington passport. Was I being shadowed? Was I just one of many Simon operatives, as would be the case for a foreign intelligence agency? But Simon was not China, India, Italy, the US, nor any other government entity. Did they have ties to one of those countries? Possibly.

Given this bizarre, other-worldly experience, I knew there was nothing that power-hungry people wouldn’t do to secure the edge needed to take down the competition and pad their own pockets. Nothing.

Since I couldn’t do anything at the moment to either prove or disprove my theory of shadow agents, I considered my phone conversation with the Gollum impersonator. I appreciated the second chance I’d been granted by Simon, albeit done so for their own greedy purposes. I was a tool in their toolbox, one they could wield in any way they so chose. And even though they had previously said I needed to complete two more missions after this one, that could have been a ruse. The moment Amadou was in my custody, they could send the signal to the electro-vial and end me.

I’d scratched my forearm repeatedly during the first ten minutes of the flight. But then I told myself not to focus on how or when my life could end. Doing so served no purpose. I had to believe I would survive. End of story.

A blue light flashed above a nearby door. A man emerged a moment later, his face knotted with tension. Customs employees in each of the booths were receiving some new information or instructions. A few lifted their arms in exasperation. People all around me started pointing and talking in every language except English. I surmised they were having computer problems. The last thing I needed—a delay.

Beyond this expansive room, peopled rushed down an adjacent hallway. Was the entire customs office suffering technology woes?

Great. Just fantastic. I put a hand to my head, imagining how many hours I’d be delayed. Hours? It could be days. I reminded myself that while Cairo was one of the largest cities in the world, the country of Egypt was still considered a developing nation. It might be foolish to expect an IT department to jump in and solve the issue within minutes.
